The State and Prospects of the Hungarian Economy - AmCham Patron breakfast with Equilibrium Institute 2024

After last year's event, our Patron breakfast with Equilibrium Institute returned on February 9. Equilibrium Institute’s experts, Ákos Kozák, Director of Business Relations and Barna Szabó, Chief Economist provided a comprehensive overview of the economic landscape. Covering key areas such as the real economy, international energy, and commodity markets, they addressed short-term risks, prospects, and economic forecasts until 2025.

The experts highlighted that currently, the economic landscape presents a mixed picture, characterized by weak domestic demand and a simultaneous decrease in investment. However, a silver lining emerges as consumption begins to show signs of growth. They also added that household consumption is important because it also affects how much comes into central budget in the form of value-added tax.

Furthermore, robust export performance serves as a counterbalance to the challenges faced on the domestic front.

Looking ahead, policymakers will need to navigate through these complexities to sustain and enhance economic stability. Measures to strenghten domestic demand, encourage investment, and manage inflation expectations will be crucial. The evolution of geopolitical situations and the ability to secure EU funding will also play pivotal roles in shaping the economic landscape in the coming years.
