Outlook on Hungary's new waste management system Zsolt Pethő, Managing Director, MOHU

As a result of the state waste management concession tender, MOL Group has been entrusted with the collection of nearly 5 million tons of municipal solid waste per year in Hungary after July 1, 2023.  To learn about the role and plans of MOL Group related to waste management and the EU’s sustainability goals, our Sustainable Growth Committee invited Zsolt Pethő, Managing Director, MOHU to an open Committee Meeting on June 23.

Mr. Pethő stated that MOL group will be responsible for the collection of the municipal waste, which accounts for nearly ¼ of all waste generated nationwide. He also highlighted that one of their major objectives is to achieve the extremely strict waste management targets set by the European Union. This includes the key cornerstones that by 2040, member states must achieve a 65 percent recycling rate and reduce the so-called landfilling rate to 10 percent. This entails moving the waste management system towards a circular economy model and developing and optimizing infrastructure. To achieve these goals the current waste management system must be improved to be more efficient to which they are planning major investments.

Mr. Pethő also noted that their new, waste management activity of a good fit to MOL's current multi-sectoral operations as the raw materials that can be recovered from waste - mainly plastics and fuel-related feedstocks - could supply important sources for its other industries which could bring circular economy solutions.
