Join us for AmCham's  Open Tax Committee on January 17, 2024, as we delve into crucial topics reshaping Hungary's tax landscape. The event is organized online

This roundtable discussion will focus on two pivotal aspects:

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR):
Last year a new obligation for products classified as circular products (e.g. packaging, electrical equipment, motor vehicles, batteries, paper for advertising, etc.) was introduced. Companies needed to set up a new administrative process and comply with the new extended producer responsibility (EPR) fees that were significantly higher than the green tax rates which were due in the past two and a half decades.

Regarding EPR we will discuss the following topics:

  • Challenges of the new system for organisations

  • How the outburst of related costs were handled

  • EPR optimization options

  • Packaging

  • Data reporting experiences

Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM):

In 2023, the EU introduced the so-called Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism which entered into force on 1 October 2023. Companies that import CBAM goods (cement, steel and iron, fertilizers, aluminum, hydrogen and electricity) in Q4 2023 are obliged to submit the first report by 31 January 2024. Until 2026 calendar quarters must be covered by similar reports and from January 2026 CBAM quotas will need to be purchased by the relevant companies.

During the Committeee meeting we will focus on the following key topics related to CBAM:

  • Challenges with the registration
  • What to report
  • Relationship with third country suppliers
  • Who is to report
